Happy Thanksgiving

We know that words have power, but sometimes I wonder exactly how much power. During the ringworm fiasco, I mentioned on my blog that all we needed next was a good case of lice. Uh, yep. Yesterday, I took Younger Son to the barber shop downtown where of course I ran into Major School Administration Official who was also getting his hair cut. The lady who cut his hair told me as subtly as she could that my child had a severe case of head lice. She cut his hair anyway, because she had already started on it when she noticed. I tipped her well and slunk out of there.

I am surprised, since he had his head checked by the nurse at school a couple of months ago as part of the school’s anti-lice campaign, and I had looked at his scalp last week and having determined that the itching was due to dandruff, proceeded to wash his hair with Nizerol.

We did the hair washing with toxic shampoo and nit-picking routine, and then for good measure, I fried his hair with the blow drier. This is undoubtably the reason that I was spared from infestation myself, since I use the hair dryer on a hot setting and also straighten my hair with a flatiron. My head is Louse Hell. I am spending a great deal of time washing everything in the house this holiday. Thank goodness for tile, anyway.

I have to say, Younger Son was quite horrifed to see the bugs on his head. I am hoping that I can use this to my advantage, in terms of Younger Son spending more time washing his hair, even though I know that is not why he got them.

Meanwhile, Older Son was on the bus going to Big City to spend time with his Overbearing Grandpa and his dad, who was meeting him there. I called his dad to let him know that he should check for little louses when Older Son arrived. Horrified, he expressed that he couldn’t bear the thought of such a thing possibly being in his house.

The bus broke down in Unspecifed Small Town. Older Son was forced to sit by the side of the road for three hours whilst being entertained by people on the run from bondsmen, former meth addicts and other colorful individuals. Older Son’s step-mother suddenly came down with a terrible unspecified illness that precluded Older Son’s dad from meeting him in Big City and then taking him back to his house the next day as planned. Older Son, given the choice between spending the holiday with his Overbearing Grandpa and me, chose to get on another bus and return home. I think Paranoid Dad was lying about the illness so he wouldn’t have to deal with lice. Louse.

At any rate, I am thankful to have Older Son back home for Thanksgiving. I am also thankful that he does not have lice. I am thankful that when I drank a little too much last night and told X what I did to his email that he was not mad at me. He said he deserved it. I am thankful that we are about to go to my parents to have dinner. I am thankful that it is a beautiful day and my skinny pants fit. Lice or no lice, life can be good. I’ll have to remind myself of this more often.

I am terrified of lice–don’t ask me why. I don’t like bugs at all, and it is a lot of work to get rid of them. Every time a note came home from the elementary school about an infestation, I would work myself into a nervous panic. I’m glad that Older Son is home, skinny pants fit, and that you have much to be thankful for. I am thankful to have both girls home for the holiday, and glad I don’t have to put it on.

Your ex’s lies and avoidance of his own son are even more reason for you to be thankful that you’re rid of him. Yes, lice are gross, but it’s his kid! Aaaargh!

    Happy Thanksgiving!

I have never thought about it before, but now I’m realizing that those shaved heads that so many men go around with these days have certain advantages. :)

Hope you ande your boys have a nice weekend.
