At What Point Should You Stop Working?

Posted on | January 8, 2008 | 1 Comment

I am seriously courting burnout and I know it. I have not taken a day off for an entire month. Besides the time I spend with Sage or cleaning the house, I am working. Actually, cleaning the house is work. But it is starting to feel like recreation. What does that mean?

Of course, whenever I start to feel whiny like this, I stop and think about miners, rice farmers, Chinese factory workers and other people who don’t have the choice of how many hours they are going to work. Then I feel like a total wimp, because my work is easy, and about a third of it is created by me, which isn’t a bad deal at all.

Still, how do you stop going when you have a goal (saving for a house) and the financial opportunities just keep popping up?

I took a day off and a half day last month, and I enjoyed it. I felt guilty about it at first, but thought about how many teachers in my building take off LOTS of time. Sometimes we need ME time. Cleaning the house feels recreational? You’d better fly up here and help me out then!
